How to Write Product Descriptions for Social Media (Not Just Your Website)

Why Website Copy Does Not Work on Social Media
Your website product description is written for someone who is already interested. They clicked on the product, they are on the page, and they are reading to make a buying decision. The copy can be detailed, feature-focused, and structured with bullet points.
Social media is different. People are scrolling, not shopping. They are looking at photos of their friends, watching funny videos, and skimming through stories. Your product post has to interrupt that behavior, grab attention, and make someone care in about two seconds.
Copying your website description and pasting it into an Instagram caption will not work. The format is wrong, the tone is wrong, and the intent is wrong. Social media product descriptions need to be rewritten from scratch with the platform and audience in mind.
Platform-Specific Formatting Rules
Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters, but only the first two lines show before the "more" button. Lead with a hook. Use line breaks to create white space and make the caption easy to scan. Hashtags go at the end or in the first comment. Aim for 150-200 words for product posts.
Facebook posts show about 480 characters before getting truncated. Keep product descriptions conversational and direct. Facebook audiences respond well to storytelling and questions. Links are clickable in Facebook posts (unlike Instagram), so always include a direct product link.
TikTok
TikTok captions max out at 4,000 characters, but shorter is usually better. Most TikTok users barely read captions. Keep it to 1-2 punchy sentences and let the video do the heavy lifting. Use 3-5 relevant hashtags.
Pinterest descriptions are for search, not conversation. Use keywords naturally in 2-3 sentences that describe the product and its use case. Include the product name, category, and key attributes. Pinterest is a search engine first, social platform second.
Character Limits and Best Practices Per Platform
- Instagram: 2,200 characters. Best at 150-200 words. Hook in the first line.
- Facebook: 63,206 characters. Best at 100-150 words. Include a link.
- TikTok: 4,000 characters. Best at 1-2 sentences plus hashtags.
- Pinterest: 500 characters for descriptions. Keyword-rich, 2-3 sentences.
- Twitter/X: 280 characters. One strong line plus a link. No room for fluff.
How to Adapt One Product into 4 Different Posts
You do not need to reinvent the wheel for every platform. Start with one product and adapt the message for each audience. Here is an example for a handmade soy candle:
Instagram Version
"That feeling when you light your favorite candle and the whole room changes. Our Lavender Fields soy candle burns for 50+ hours and fills your space with a calming blend of lavender and vanilla. Hand-poured in small batches. Shop through the link in bio."
Facebook Version
"Looking for a candle that actually lasts? Our Lavender Fields soy candle gives you 50+ hours of burn time with a soothing lavender and vanilla scent. Hand-poured and made with 100% natural soy wax. [Product link]"
TikTok Version
"The candle that lasts 50+ hours. Lavender + vanilla. Hand-poured soy wax. Link in bio."
Pinterest Version
"Lavender Fields Soy Candle - hand-poured natural soy wax candle with lavender and vanilla scent. Burns 50+ hours. Perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, and self-care routines. Shop handmade candles."
Same product, four different posts. Each one is tailored to how people use that platform. The Instagram version tells a story. Facebook is direct and includes a link. TikTok is short and punchy. Pinterest is keyword-optimized for search.
Scaling This Across Your Catalog
Adapting one product into four posts is manageable. Doing it for 50 or 100 products is a full-time job. This is where AI-powered tools become essential. Instead of manually rewriting every description for every platform, you can generate platform-specific captions from your existing product data and then fine-tune them to match your brand voice.
